Fortress Overview
Fortress is a puzzle game that adapts the falling-block mechanics of Tetris for a competitive building and siege experience. Players arrange geometric pieces to construct a castle, with the core objective being to accumulate a target score before the opposing player does. The initial setup involves a timer and a castle gate placed between two flags, with the opponent's structure visible on the left side of the screen.
Standard pieces form the basic structure, where every 2x3 grid becomes a wall and an 8x3 grid transforms into a wizard's tower capable of summoning attacking creatures. Specialized blocks introduce functional elements: cannons automatically fire at the enemy, window blocks release repair peons to fix damage, and bomb blocks launch peons at a chosen target on the opponent's fortress. Protecting these special blocks with surrounding walls is a strategic consideration, as both players also face random monster attacks from the bottom of the screen.
Control involves maneuvering pieces with the digital pad, with the up button accelerating their descent. The A and B buttons handle clockwise and counter-clockwise rotation, respectively. A full view of the battlefield can be obtained by holding the R trigger while moving the screen, while the L trigger sacrifices the top three rows of your own castle at a cost to your score.
Variation is provided through three distinct game modes—tournament, battle, and blitz—which alter the timer duration and score goals. The aesthetic setting can shift across four different themes: pre-historic, medieval, pirate, and space.
