Car Battler Joe is a role-playing game where vehicular combat is the primary action. The player controls a sixteen-year-old protagonist who begins a quest to locate his missing father, a famous car battler, while pursuing the same career path. His journey is enabled by a special vehicle and a robotic assistant received as a birthday gift.
Gameplay revolves around acquiring missions, which are often challenging due to strict time constraints. These tasks include deliveries, enemy destruction, item retrieval, and one-on-one duels, with financial rewards increased for faster completion. While story-based objectives are longer and lack a timer, randomly generated jobs provide a steady income.
Progression involves managing a garage of customizable cars. Starting with a single vehicle, the player can construct others by collecting parts. Four chassis types are available, from light buggies to heavy trucks and hovercraft, each with distinct advantages. Offensive capabilities are defined by mounting two to four weapons, categorized into missile, flame, or beam damage types.
