Where in Space Is Carmen Sandiego?: Deluxe applies the established investigative formula of the series to an astronomical setting. The player assumes the role of an ACME detective tasked with pursuing Carmen Sandiego and her alien accomplices across various celestial locations.
Gameplay revolves around gathering clues from a shipboard computer system, the VAL 9000, which provides educational data on space-related history, science, and mythology. This information is used to track suspects through a network of 32 locations, supported by over a thousand possible clues, suggesting a challenging scope of investigation.
The presentation utilizes authentic NASA imagery of solar system bodies, complemented by features like planetary fly-bys and animated sequences with alien characters. A distinct musical score is assigned to different planetary systems, and the package includes both a game manual and a separate astronomy booklet for reference.
