Ultima Underworld II: Labyrinth of Worlds Overview
Ultima Underworld II: Labyrinth of Worlds is a direct sequel to the first Ultima Underworld, retaining its core systems of real time combat, magic, and interactive object manipulation within a three dimensional environment. The player defines the protagonist, known as the Avatar, by selecting gender, class, and starting skills, which cover both combat and social interactions. Character progression involves gaining experience, leveling up to improve attributes, and finding trainers to enhance specific abilities.
Narratively, the game is set shortly after Ultima VII. A celebration at Lord British's castle is interrupted when the antagonist, the Guardian, traps the entire structure inside a massive blackrock gem. To break this enchantment, the Avatar must journey through a series of disparate worlds accessed via a related blackrock teleporter found in the castle sewers. This premise allows for a larger and more varied game world than the previous title, featuring locations such as an ice world, an alien realm, and an ethereal void.
Technical improvements were made over the original, including a larger display area for the three dimensional view, updated monster designs, and the introduction of digitized sound effects. The adventure requires exploration of these diverse environments while engaging with the game's systems to overcome obstacles.
