Turbo OutRun Overview
Turbo Out Run is a driving game set across sixteen distinct stages that visually represent a cross country route from the eastern to western United States. The player controls a car from a rear view perspective, navigating branching paths while avoiding collisions that can result in spins, slowdowns, or flips, each costing valuable time. A time limit for each stage creates a challenging pace, as failure to finish deducts one of the five available continues.
New environmental elements include variable weather, night driving conditions, and obstacles on the track. Police vehicles also present a hazard during races. The defining mechanical addition is a turbo booster that provides a speed increase, though excessive use risks engine overheating. This booster is only replenished at maintenance shops, which appear every four stages and offer optional performance upgrades and an automatic transmission setting.
