The Settlers Overview
The Settlers is a strategy game where players manage resources and territory against up to three rivals. Its visual style is cartoony, accompanied by lighthearted humor. Victory requires the complete military defeat of all opposing factions.
Gameplay revolves around a complex production chain. Essential resources like wood and stone are needed for construction, while food such as fish, bread, or pork must be systematically produced to sustain workers. These workers, in turn, operate mines to extract iron, coal, and gold. Territorial expansion is achieved by constructing huts and watchtowers, which can strategically encroach upon and disrupt an opponent's critical operations.
The game includes thirty preset missions, with six tutorial levels designed to teach mechanics to beginners. For varied play, semi-random maps can be generated using a sixteen-digit key. Map sizes range from small to huge, with the largest scales supporting exceptionally long sessions, as indicated by in-game statistics tracking up to fifty hours. These custom maps support solo play or a two-player mode on a single computer using two mice, with a vertically split screen.
Military conflict is resolved through individual duels between soldiers. Winning such a combat results in the loss of all enemy buildings in the immediate vicinity, making tactical strikes a key element of conquest.
