Space Quest III: The Pirates of Pestulon is a graphical adventure game. Its control scheme combines mouse functionality for basic movement and inventory with a text parser for issuing specific commands and interacting with objects in the environment.
The protagonist, Roger Wilco, begins the story adrift in an escape pod, which is subsequently collected as scrap by a garbage ship. After awakening amidst the refuse, a situation fitting for his janitorial background, his primary objective becomes finding a way off the vessel. Success in this endeavor grants him broader access to the galaxy, where he encounters various obstacles including a collections cyborg pursuing him for unpaid debts and the corporate confines of a software company named Scummsoft.
Gameplay extends beyond the core adventure puzzle-solving to include several distinct mini-games. These range from a basic arcade-style game called Astro Chicken to a separate system for managing ship-to-ship combat via a radar screen interface. The setting also features mundane galactic locations, such as a popular hamburger restaurant noted for its greasy food.
