Last Ninja 2: Back with a Vengeance is an action-adventure title where the player guides a ninja through a series of isometric environments. The protagonist, having acquired ancient scrolls and begun training new disciples, is abruptly pulled from his era into a modern New York setting by the return of a malevolent Shogun.
Progress requires navigating multi-screen levels, each representing distinct locations, while gathering useful objects like keys, rope, and maps. Health can be restored by consuming certain items, such as hamburgers found in the world. The ninja moves in four primary directions and can jump, facing a variety of armed opponents who patrol the areas.
Combat employs both hand-to-hand techniques and discovered weapons, with options to attack, block, or use a special projectile. The shuriken, a thrown weapon, inflicts significant or immediate damage on contact.
