Impact Overview
Impact is a multiplayer arcade title for the 8-bit Atari where two to four participants each control a skimmer. These vessels move with inertia in all directions and are equipped with a key defensive tool: a bumper that projects a temporary forcefield.
Strategic use of the shield is central, as a shielded skimmer can destroy an opponent whose shield is down. A collision between two unshielded vessels results in mutual destruction. Following its use, the shield depletes and requires a recharge period, leaving the vessel vulnerable. The last player with any vessels remaining wins, with matches also playable under a time limit.
Options allow for balancing competition, such as granting certain players a handicap of a longer-lasting shield. The game provides variety through a selection of seventeen distinct boards.
