Timecop Overview
"Timecop" for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System is a side-scrolling action game that functions as a narrative follow-up to the Jean-Claude Van Damme film. The player controls Van Damme's character, who must confront the original inventor of time travel after this villain seizes power and declares himself universal dictator.
A notable technical aspect for its era is the use of digitized sprites, created from footage of actors filmed against a bluescreen. While this gives the characters a distinct visual style on the SNES, it contributes to a challenging feel in combat, as enemy reactions and general control timing are described as inconsistent. The player has access to a basic set of fighting maneuvers and a firearm with scarce ammunition.
The adventure spans 15 levels, primarily consisting of combat and platforming across various historical settings. This structure is occasionally broken up by vehicle-based sequences. The conflict concludes with a unique jetpack battle above Los Angeles against the primary antagonist. The audio design includes sparse digital voice samples, most recognizably in a recurring background track during the initial stages.
