Puyo Puyo 2 is a falling block puzzle game where players arrange colored blobs. The core mechanic involves linking four or more matching Puyos to clear them from the field. This can trigger chain reactions as remaining pieces drop, potentially creating combos.
Successful combos send obstructive blocks to an opponent's side. These special blocks are cleared indirectly by removing Puyos next to them. The game offers several modes, including a story campaign featuring the character Arle against computer foes and a competitive versus mode for two players.
Exclusive to the Super Nintendo version are options for four-player competition and an endless solo mode. The strategic depth comes from planning these chain reactions to overwhelm the opponent, making the gameplay challenging.
