Final Fantasy II Overview
Final Fantasy II is a Japanese role playing game originally released as the fourth main series entry. Its narrative follows Cecil, a military captain who becomes an exile after questioning orders from his king. The plot involves crystals and a party whose composition changes according to story events, with characters like a dragoon and various mages possessing fixed, predefined classes and abilities that unlock automatically.
Gameplay involves navigating a top down world map with random enemy encounters. The combat system is a turn based foundation modified by an active time element, where a character's agility determines how quickly a gauge fills to allow an action. Enemies do not wait for player input, creating a fair pace of engagement. Party size can reach up to five members during battles.
Later re releases introduced additional content. The PlayStation version included new full motion video sequences for the introduction and conclusion. The Game Boy Advance port added two optional dungeons: an eight floor Cave of Trials and a more extensive forty floor Lunar Ruins area accessible after the main story.
