Chrono Trigger Overview
Chrono Trigger is a Japanese role-playing game where players manage a party of up to seven characters, improving their combat abilities and equipment. The narrative begins when Crono and his friend Lucca attempt to retrieve a girl named Marle, whose accidental teleportation to the past sets off a chain of events requiring travel across different eras to alter world history.
Combat uses an active time battle system that can be configured for either real-time or fully turn-based engagements. Enemies are always visible on field maps, allowing players to avoid encounters, and no battles occur on the world map. Characters learn special techniques called techs, which consume magic points and can target specific enemy formations. These techs can be combined between party members for more powerful double or triple attacks.
After gaining the ability to move freely through time, the plot becomes non-linear. Players can choose when to confront the final adversary, leading to thirteen possible conclusions. A New Game+ mode lets players restart while retaining character levels, techs, and gear. Later releases, such as the PlayStation and Nintendo DS versions, added animated cutscenes, bonus media galleries, extra dungeons, and an additional ending.
