Doom is a first-person shooter where a lone marine fights through demonic forces on Mars and beyond. The setting shifts from a technological base to hellish landscapes filled with satanic imagery. Players navigate complex, multi-level environments with varying light conditions, using an automap to avoid hazards like crushing ceilings or toxic waste.
Combat involves a range of weapons, each with distinct traits and ammunition types, from a basic pistol to the powerful BFG9000. Enemies include corrupted humans and various demons, culminating in boss fights. The objective in each level is to find the exit, often requiring the use of switches and colored keycards to progress.
Power-ups such as medkits, armor, and temporary invisibility aid survival. The game popularized cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes, though some console ports omitted these or featured simplified content. Different versions exist across platforms, with variations in levels, engines, and available episodes.
