Jantei Monogatari is a Sega Genesis title that merges a Japanese adventure game with competitive mahjong. The core premise involves the investigation into the kidnapping of Yū Honjō, a high school chairman's daughter. Because the police cannot be involved, her sister Mai employs a private detective to handle the case.
Progress is made entirely through winning mahjong matches against various characters. The detective begins with three fellow students seen with Yū in a photograph, and each victory yields new information. This acquired knowledge then unlocks further interactions and opponents, with about a dozen matches required to advance the narrative fully.
The adventure elements are menu-driven, with the player directing the unnamed investigator to different locations and characters. The core investigative mechanic is consistent: successful mahjong play is the sole method to extract clues and push the story forward toward resolving the kidnapping.
