Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf Overview
Desert Strike: Return to the Gulf is the initial entry in its series, casting the player as a pilot tasked with preventing a global nuclear conflict. The scenario involves a rogue general seizing control of an Arab Emirate after the Gulf War, creating a crisis that requires military intervention.
Gameplay involves piloting an AH-64A Apache helicopter from an isometric, overhead view to complete various mission objectives. These assignments include destroying key installations like power plants and SCUD missiles, as well as locating and rescuing personnel. The helicopter is armed with a machine gun and two distinct missile types for engaging ground defenses such as anti-aircraft guns, tanks, and missile launchers.
Survival depends on managing two resources: fuel and armor, which functions as health. The craft is lost if either fuel is exhausted or armor is fully depleted. Resources can be replenished by collecting pickups found in the environment and by successfully returning rescued prisoners and missing soldiers to a designated landing zone, making rescue operations tactically important for sustainability. The need to balance offensive action, evasion, and resource management makes the experience challenging.
