Battle Squadron is a shooter for one or two players, where players pilot a spacecraft through hostile environments. The game is a spiritual successor to Hybris, beginning in a high-tech landscape before transitioning to an organic setting.
Players can adjust several parameters before starting, including the number of lives and the speed and quantity of enemy projectiles. During play, weapon modifications and a Nova Smart Bomb can be acquired as power-ups. This level of control over starting resources and enemy behavior allows players to tailor the experience, making it potentially fair or challenging based on their choices.
