Galaxian is a shoot 'em up where the player controls a ship positioned at the screen's bottom, facing formations of alien adversaries above. Destroying these targets involves lateral movement to aim and firing projectiles upward.
Enemy types include Drones, Emissaries, Hornets, and Commanders, with point values increasing for those positioned higher in the formation. The gameplay rhythm involves periodic, challenging moments where individual enemies break formation to dive toward the player, often accompanied by a bomber. Successfully eliminating all aliens in a wave triggers the start of a new one.
