Super Robot Taisen Overview
Super Robot Taisen for the Game Boy establishes a distinct foundation for the series, featuring a setting where sentient robots, devoid of human pilots, inhabit their own planet. A conflict is triggered when an entity named Gil Gil Gan seizes control of many inhabitants. The player selects an initial team from licensed robots, such as those from Gundam, Mazinger, or Getter Robo, and designates a leader unit whose destruction ends the game.
Gameplay involves tactical movement and combat on a grid-based map. Interaction is managed through menus for movement, attacks, and special options. A notable system is negotiation, which is more critical here than in later titles because defeated friendly units are not automatically repaired and may reappear under enemy control, though successful negotiation often requires weakening a target first. Between missions, power-up items found in map bases can be equipped to enhance robots with new weapons or shields.
Unit progression is tied to experience gained from defeating enemies, with level increases improving statistics like speed, armor, and health. A separate resource, Spiritual Power, fuels unit-specific commands that can modify combat variables. Combat animations are basic, showing limited movement. Players can select weapons before an attack, with ranged options providing a tactical advantage by preventing counterattacks. Weapon effectiveness is influenced by terrain and the positioning of units on land, sea, or air.
