Super Robot Taisen EX is a tactical role-playing game that functions as a series spin-off, shifting its narrative focus to original characters rather than licensed anime protagonists. The setting diverges from pure science fiction, blending a medieval fantasy world of magic and mythical beings with the advanced technology of surface-dwelling robots.
The story follows Masaki's return to the subterranean realm of La Gias, which is torn by civil war. This conflict escalates when gates to the surface world forcibly summon veteran robot pilots, intertwining their fates with the new struggle. Among them, Ryune becomes a key figure, prioritizing aid for other summoned allies. The narrative is divided into three distinct campaigns of escalating challenge, starting with Masaki's easy path and Ryune's fair one, culminating in a challenging third story unlocked later. Player choices in one campaign can influence events in another through a data import feature.
Core gameplay involves commanding units on a tactical map, leading to animated battle sequences. Several mechanical refinements were introduced, including more granular counterattack settings, the combination of movement and ranged fire in a single turn, and area-effect weapons. Progression systems allow for upgrading individual robot weapons alongside the pilots and their machines, while certain powerful attacks now depend on specific pilot statistics. Interface improvements provide clearer combat information and more efficient unit management.
