Tales of Phantasia Overview
Tales of Phantasia for the Game Boy Advance is a port that synthesizes elements from its PlayStation and Super Famicom predecessors while introducing exclusive material. Its foundation is the PlayStation remake, from which it adopts core combat mechanics, though at a reduced pace, alongside certain sprites and voice clips. Several PlayStation features are retained, including specific recruitable characters, optional dungeons, and gameplay systems like cooking and a run button.
Conversely, the port omits a significant amount of content from the PlayStation version. This includes all animated sequences, a local cooperative mode, specific minigames, and certain optional areas. Some control modes are also functionally unavailable for most of the adventure due to a key item's placement late in the game. The presentation mixes sources, using the Super Famicom's world map and introductory theme instead of their PlayStation counterparts.
New additions distinguish this version. A summon spell shares its name with a removed Super Famicom ability but is functionally unique. A character-specific side quest is repositioned within the timeline and expanded with new narrative elements. An entirely new optional dungeon provides an alternate method to acquire a summon. After the main story concludes, a timed mini-campaign becomes available, focusing on a different character and offering multiple endings based on performance.
