HacX Overview
HacX is a commercial expansion built upon the Doom II engine, featuring entirely original assets including textures, sprites, and audio. The setting and narrative diverge completely from its parent franchise, focusing on a hacker named Danny Evanger who is recruited by the government during a national crisis.
After being imprisoned for a failed hack on the biotech firm Genemp, Evanger is contacted to infiltrate corporate databases and find evidence. His physical conditioning from prison and his hacking expertise are central to the mission. This premise facilitates a unique level type where the player traverses cyberspace, enabled by an implanted device, encountering specific environmental puzzles and exclusive enemies.
The core gameplay loop remains familiar, involving navigating levels, defeating enemies, and locating key items. However, the visual design leans toward more detailed, realistic environments compared to Doom. Engine modifications allow for features like destructible objects. While many weapons and power-ups are functionally similar to Doom's, albeit renamed and visually altered, the enemy roster exhibits significant behavioral and statistical differences.
