Bakumatsu Kōrinden: Oni is a Japanese-style role-playing game where players guide a young protagonist through a fantastical version of late Edo period Japan. The narrative centers on a mystical energy source known as reiketsu, which has become the target of foreign powers and internal factions following the end of the country's long isolation.
Players assume the role of Yamatomaru, a village youth who, after a personal loss and an encounter with a secretive agent, is drawn into a conflict involving the Shadow Shinsengumi. This hidden branch of the famous special force deals with supernatural threats beyond ordinary human capability. The story progresses from a simple rescue mission into a broader struggle over the control of reiketsu.
Mechanically, the game employs random, turn-based combat viewed from a first-person perspective. Characters utilize standard physical attacks alongside special moves powered by spiritual energy.
