Player activity is segmented across three primary modes. One mode focuses on managing the Enterprise from its bridge, where various stations handle navigation, communication, sensor analysis, database access, damage control, mission briefings, and initiating ship-to-ship combat or away team deployment. Another mode involves planetary missions, where a team of four crew members with varied attributes and special skills is assembled for top-down exploration; these missions blend basic real-time combat with environmental puzzles often solved through tricorder data and item usage.
