Pete Sampras Tennis is a simulation offering several modes of play, including exhibition matches, tournaments, and a world tour. The roster features thirty athletes, with the top ranked player of the era included.
Matches take place on various international court surfaces such as grass, clay, and hard courts. A training mode introduces players to the available shot types, which include forehands, lobs, and drop shots. The perspective for gameplay is a standard third person camera angle.
A technical feature of the Genesis release was its use of a J Cartridge. This integrated design allowed for four player matches directly from the cartridge without additional hardware. Similarly, the Game Gear version supported multiplayer through a single unit or by linking two systems for four player doubles.
