Speedball 2 - Brutal Deluxe is a futuristic sports game where the player assumes the role of a manager tasked with improving a notably poor team. The core experience involves participating in fast-paced matches while also handling team development between games.
Matches are played in two short periods, featuring aggressive, high-speed gameplay where physical play is a valid tactic to gain possession. The playing field contains various interactive elements, including score multipliers on the sides and portals that redirect the ball. Special tokens appear during play, some granting temporary team advantages like increased strength or the ability to immobilize opponents.
Scoring is not solely dependent on goals. Players can also aim for five stars on the pitch, each worth points, though opponents can negate these by hitting the same star. The final point values for these stars are only determined after each half. Running the ball through the side multipliers increases the value of any points scored, though this bonus can be immediately lost if the opposing team seizes the ball.
Team management is a parallel system to the on-field action. Funds are earned from match results and by collecting silver tokens during play. This money is spent in an upgrade system between matches, where the manager can either enhance the original, limited players or purchase and integrate superior new team members.
