Lion King Overview
The Lion King for Nintendo 8-bit systems is a platform game adaptation of the 1994 film. It features nine levels, though the NES release contains only the first six. Players guide Simba through side-scrolling stages, with his abilities changing as he grows from a cub to an adult.
As a cub, Simba can jump on enemies, roar to stun them, and roll to break barriers. Adult Simba, appearing later in the game, loses the roll but gains a scratching attack. The enemy roster includes lizards, bugs, spiders, and porcupines which require stunning before they can be defeated. Hyenas present a challenging threat, and the final confrontation is with Scar.
Level design introduces variations on the standard platforming. One stage recreates the wildebeest stampede from a top-down perspective, requiring the player to dodge automatically. Another is structured as a series of locked rooms where all hyenas must be cleared to proceed. Collectible power-ups restore health, grant extra lives, or create in-level save points.
A special collectible bug icon triggers a mini-game where the player controls Pumbaa. In this diversion, catching falling bugs while avoiding spiders can yield life and continue bonuses.
