The Lion King Overview
The Lion King for Nintendo 8-bit systems is a platform game adapting the 1994 Disney film. It features nine levels, though the NES release contains only the first six. The player controls Simba, who progresses from a cub to an adult lion, with each form possessing distinct abilities.
Gameplay primarily involves side-scrolling platform navigation where Simba must confront various enemies. As a cub, he can jump on foes, use a roar to stun them, and roll to break certain obstacles. Upon reaching adulthood in later levels, he gains a scratching attack but loses the rolling maneuver. Enemies include lizards, bugs, spiders, and porcupines, which require stunning before they can be defeated. Hyenas present a more challenging threat than common foes.
Level design incorporates variations beyond standard platforming. One stage recreates the film's stampede from an overhead perspective, requiring the player to dodge automatically advancing buffalo. Another level is structured as a series of locked rooms where all hyenas must be cleared to proceed. Collectible power-ups include health-restoring bugs, extra lives, and lion icons that create in-level save points.
A hidden mini-game, "Bug Patrol," can be activated by finding special bug icons. In this diversion, the player controls Pumbaa to catch falling bugs while avoiding spiders, earning life and continue rewards. The game concludes with a confrontation against the final boss, Scar.
