Battle City is a Game Boy adaptation of the arcade title Tank Battalion. Players control a tank tasked with defending a base from enemy units across multiple stages.
Progression occurs after eliminating twenty opposing tanks, which unlocks a new stage with a distinct layout. The environment contains various terrain types, such as destructible red bricks, fortified silver bricks, water, and ice. These elements can be used strategically for cover or to impede movement.
The player's tank begins in a basic state but can be upgraded incrementally during play. Once the included thirty five pre designed levels are completed, a construction mode becomes available for creating custom stages.
