Alleyway presents a simplified version of the Breakout formula. The player directs a podship to bounce a ball upward, aiming to clear a screen filled with destructible blocks.
Progress is achieved by eliminating every block in a stage. Some blocks may require multiple hits before they are removed. The game introduces variations to this pattern, including stages where the block formation rotates or periodically shifts downward.
