Aerostar is a vertically scrolling shooter viewed from above. The player's aircraft is restricted to following predetermined paths on the ground, though it can temporarily leave them.
This temporary ascent comes with a tactical trade-off, as the aircraft's weapons become inactive during the maneuver. The craft can then return to its original path or a different one. Enemy encounters culminate in challenging boss fights at each stage's conclusion.
Collectible power-ups are available during play, which grant access to various offensive upgrades. These include different missile types, laser weapons, and defensive guardian pods. The game provides no narrative context for its action.
