Pokémon Gold Version is set in the Johto region, a new location introduced years after the events of the initial games. The core objective remains to achieve the status of champion trainer, a goal pursued by defeating Gym Leaders to collect their badges.
Player activities are broadly divided between this championship pursuit and the separate task of completing the Pokédex. The latter involves capturing wild creatures, earning funds through trainer battles, and engaging in trades with both non-player characters and other players. Several functional upgrades are present, including an enhanced PokéGear and a Pokédex with new sorting capabilities, alongside the introduction of new Pokémon species. The foundational gameplay loop retains its familiar structure despite these additions.
