Koto Battle: Tengai no Moribito is a Game Boy Color title centered on card-based combat. The player character is a young man whose sister is a miko, a guardian who uses spiritual cards known as kotodama. This background motivates his own goal of joining the moribito, a warrior group dedicated to protecting these guardians.
The game's setting is defined by a past conflict where a destructive kotodama of the ki element was sealed away by five other elemental forces. These protectors subsequently dispersed, leaving the miko to maintain balance using a broader set of ten elemental cards. Gameplay involves journeying across the land and engaging in battles against both wild creatures and rival card battlers.
Combat presents a menu with four core options, allowing the player to employ cards, review their history, defend, or attempt to flee. The kotodama cards themselves fall into categories including monsters, items, and magical effects, forming the basis for strategic encounters.
