Benjamin Blummchen: Ein verruckter Tag im Zoo is an action game for the Game Boy Color based on a German children's audio series. The story follows the elephant Benjamin and his friend Otto, who are tasked by a reporter to photograph zoo animals, leading to a series of misadventures.
Progress is saved with passwords, and previously finished stages can be replayed. The six levels each introduce distinct gameplay styles. Two stages are side scrolling, where Benjamin navigates hazards like animated objects and animals, with his health represented by collectible sugar cubes.
Other stages shift perspective and control. Otto is playable in an underwater cave where he must manage his air supply, and later in a top down race where he rides a zebra against other animals. Another level features a top down chase through a house where Benjamin must avoid furniture. Comic style images are used to advance the narrative between these action sequences.
