NHL 2002 Overview
NHL 2002 represents the singular appearance of EA's hockey franchise on the Game Boy Advance. Its visual presentation is a 2D top-down perspective, a deliberate departure from the contemporary 3D console editions and a direct callback to the series' 16-bit origins. In fact, the game is a close adaptation of the Super Nintendo title NHL 96, replicating its modes, interface, and graphical style.
Player management is a component of the season mode, which incorporates trading, free agent signings, and a custom player creator. This mode utilizes the complete 2001-2002 NHL schedule, allowing users to play as any team in any scheduled match on any given day, with the option to simulate past unplayed dates. For more casual play, exhibition and practice modes are available, the latter permitting adjustment of the number of athletes on the ice.
The game supports linked multiplayer for up to four participants, enabling both cooperative and head-to-head matches. This social feature expands the scope of the handheld experience beyond its single-player offerings.
