Mortal Kombat Advance Overview
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance for the Game Boy Advance is a portable adaptation of its console counterpart. The fighting system operates on a two-dimensional plane, though the visual presentation simulates a three-dimensional space using scaled backgrounds and a textured floor. Player movement includes the ability to side-step, which prompts a corresponding camera rotation.
Control inputs are streamlined for the handheld, utilizing two primary attack buttons for punches and kicks instead of the original five. A shoulder button handles blocking, while another switches between each character's two unique fighting stances, which govern their combos and special moves. The console version's dedicated weapon stance is absent, replaced by integrated weapon attacks for most fighters. Series hallmarks like Fatalities are present, and the GBA edition exclusively retains Shang Tsung's character-morphing ability.
The roster and environments are reduced from the home console game, offering twelve combatants and thirteen arenas. Approximately half of this content is accessible immediately, with the remainder locked. Progression involves earning a single universal currency, called koins, across various game modes. These koins are spent in a Krypt to open 120 koffins, which yield the locked characters, arenas, alternate costumes, and other extras.
Available modes provide standard arcade ladder matches, a survival challenge with limited health recovery between fights, and linked competitive play where players can wager their koins. Two mini-games are also included: Test Your Might, which involves rapid button presses to break objects, and Test Your Sight, a shell game variant.
