The roster consists of eight characters, all returning from the Nintendo 64 installment. Multiplayer functionality supports up to four participants in both racing and battle modes, with options for either a single shared cartridge or individual copies for full character selection.
Gameplay involves collecting coins scattered on the courses to increase kart velocity. The arsenal of items includes several projectile types, such as the familiar colored shells and the spiked shell.
