International Superstar Soccer adapts a console soccer series for the Game Boy handheld. The primary competition involves selecting from 36 national teams to compete in an International Cup.
Team management is a component of play, allowing for the selection of formations and player stances. Adjustments can be made before a match and again at halftime. Individual athlete performance is influenced by a condition rating separate from their base statistics.
Match rules and flow can be customized through several settings. These include game duration, the presence of fouls, and how overtime is handled.
