Asterix & Obelix XXL Overview
Asterix & Obelix XXL for the Game Boy Advance adapts the console title's narrative into a handheld-specific 3D platformer. The core objective involves traversing six Roman provinces, each containing multiple levels where the simple goal is to find the exit.
Gameplay revolves around controlling either Asterix or Obelix, with the ability to switch between them freely. Their distinct skills are central to progression: Asterix can perform a double jump and carry torches, while Obelix possesses greater strength for punching and moving large stone blocks. Opposition comes from various Roman soldiers and other foes like barbarians, most of which are dispatched fair easily through combat.
Defeated enemies drop helmets, which serve as a primary collectible and currency. These helmets, along with health-restoring hams and temporary invincibility potions, are scattered throughout the environments. Light puzzle-solving is required, often involving switches to activate platforms or open doors.
The collected helmets can be spent at a peddler's in-level store, exchanged for health items or new combat maneuvers. Certain stages, called "Ob-Sleigh" levels, change the formula by having Obelix slide down slopes with Asterix riding him, where collecting items requires balancing speed for jumps with slower movement for gathering.
Progress is further augmented by gathering golden laurels and helmets, which unlock a dedicated Ob-Sleigh bonus mode featuring both main game and exclusive courses.
