Aka-chan Doubutsuen is a simulation title where the player manages a zoo. The core responsibility involves caring for a large collection of more than 160 animals, which represent over 40 distinct species.
Gameplay is structured around a daily cycle, though the passage of time is condensed. The player experiences only a selection of days each month across a two-year period, making the pacing fair. Each day follows a routine of checking on animals in their enclosures to monitor health, provide food, and maintain cleanliness.
Interaction extends beyond basic care through a set of twelve minigames. These activities, which can include games with rings or balls, allow for more playful engagement. Animals within the zoo can be taught to perform various tricks.
