The Rings of Medusa is set in a medieval kingdom where the player, as the deposed king's son, must reclaim the throne from the sorceress Medusa. To achieve this, the central objective involves locating five magical rings held by powerful mercenary armies scattered across the land.
Gameplay blends strategic, economic, and action elements. Initial activities focus on resource gathering, which can involve trading between towns, bounty hunting, or seeking treasure. Accumulated wealth is then used to raise and maintain military forces necessary to confront the ring-holding armies. The experience occasionally shifts into direct action through arcade-style sequences, such as naval engagements or one-on-one sword fights.
Progression follows a logical sequence from economic preparation to military conquest. The prince first secures funds, then commands his troops in field battles to pursue the ultimate goal of obtaining the rings and defeating Medusa.
