Ragnarok Overview
Ragnarok, known as Valhalla in some regions, is a roguelike computer game set in a medieval fantasy world inspired by Norse mythology. The player controls a young Viking in the year 999 A.D. who seeks to confront or delay the prophesied end of the world, known as Ragnarok. This goal involves undertaking specific quests tied to mythological figures, such as retrieving lost artifacts for gods like Odin and Thor.
The game world is structured across three primary realms: Midgaard for mortals, Asgard for gods, and Niflheim for the dead, alongside numerous other planes. Each playthrough generates a unique world, with randomized elements like shopkeeper locations, making the experience different every time. This contributes to a challenging and repeatable structure.
Character progression is defined by a flexible class system. Players select from six roles, including a fighter Viking, a spellcasting Conjurer, a crafting Blacksmith, and a knowledge-focused Sage. A key mechanic allows characters to change their class every ten levels to access different skills, with each class mastering its primary abilities, like forging weapons or writing scrolls, by that point. Additionally, magical items or events can temporarily or permanently grant a character skills outside their chosen class.
