Micro Machines Overview
Micro Machines presents a top down racing experience where miniature vehicles compete on household surfaces. The tracks are domestic environments like desktops and sandpits, with obstacles such as binders and pencil sharpeners integrated into the scenery. Up to four cars can race in these compact, overhead view courses.
A primary single player mode involves progressing through a sequence of twenty one tracks. The player selects three CPU opponents before a series of races, introducing a strategic element in managing competition. A player must finish in the top two to advance, with opponents being eliminated at intervals. Performing well without using a continue can unlock a time trial for an extra life, making the overall progression challenging.
The game's notable feature is its competitive multiplayer system. In this mode, players begin with four points each. The objective is to force the opposing car off screen repeatedly, shifting a slider in your favor. Victory is achieved by reaching the end of this slider, which requires outperforming the opponent by a set margin. If three laps are completed first, the leader at that moment wins, with a tie resulting in a sudden death round. While nine tracks support this head to head format, it is also available as a single player option across all courses.
Vehicle types are matched to specific terrains, such as sports cars on a desk or tanks on a battlefield. The tank class introduces direct combat, allowing players to shoot opponents ahead of them. Tracks encourage deviation from the painted path, with elements like snooker table pockets and visual gags in scattered homework adding variety to the races.
