Heimdall Overview
Heimdall is a DOS game set in Norse mythology where the player controls the demi-god of the same name. His role is to guard Asgard from evil forces, a duty now complicated by the approaching Ragnarok and the theft of divine weapons by Loki. To recover Thor's hammer, Odin's sword, and Frey's spear, the now mortal Heimdall must explore three distinct lands: Midgard, Utgard, and Asgard itself.
Each land is composed of numerous islands containing many rooms, forming an isometric environment for exploration. Gameplay involves navigating this landscape to solve puzzles and combat enemies, a style comparable to the game Cadaver. Before this main quest begins, the player must complete three initial sub-games which influence later progression.
These opening challenges include an Axe Throwing Contest with an unsteady cursor, Pig Catching, and a Long Boat Fight. Performance here determines Heimdall's core attributes and, crucially, how many companions are available for selection from a pool of up to thirty characters. Poor performance makes the recruitment process challenging, as it limits the party's size and locks out some of the more capable options.
