Ogre Battle unfolds on the continent of Zetegenia, where a tyrannical empress has ruled for a quarter century. The player assumes command of the Liberation Army, a resistance force seeking to overthrow her regime. This command involves overseeing a large and diverse roster of units, from standard military types to mythical beings like dragons and angels, each with distinct combat roles.
Gameplay blends two primary modes: a real-time strategic layer for moving forces across a map, and turn-based tactical engagements when units clash. Character progression is persistent, with units gaining strength, changing classes, and utilizing special items or tarot cards in combat. The player also interacts with towns to acquire equipment and manage resources.
