Total Football Overview
Total Football is an international soccer simulation for the Sega Genesis, drawing its name from the famous Dutch tactical system. The game presents players with a choice of fifty two national teams, which includes a special all star selection, for use across several competition formats.
Its on field perspective utilizes a low angle isometric view, which creates a unique control scheme. Player movement is relative to the pitch rather than the screen, so pressing right moves a player along the touchline. Ball actions, such as passing with varied force or shooting, are handled through separate button inputs.
Before a match begins, users can configure numerous options common to the sports genre. These settings cover match half length, weather and indoor conditions, referee strictness, tie breaking procedures, and audio preferences for music and sound effects. Managerial control during play is limited to selecting from eight tactical formations at the start of the game and at halftime.
The available competitive modes consist of a sixteen team league, a thirty two team knockout tournament, and another thirty two team championship structured similarly to a World Cup event.
