Race America Overview
Race America is a cross-country racing title for the NES featuring direct competition between two vehicles. The game supports both human and computer-controlled opponents, with eight distinct rivals programmed to possess specific racing strengths.
Its visual presentation dynamically changes during a race. The initial segment uses a side-scrolling view as the cars leave the starting line. Later, the perspective shifts to a split-screen third-person display, where the leading driver is shown above the trailing one. An overhead camera angle is also utilized at times.
Gameplay involves managing a challenging six-speed manual transmission. Players must shift gears using the control pad, an action that cannot be performed simultaneously with accelerating.
