EarthBound Overview
EarthBound is a top-down role-playing game and a sequel to Mother. Its story begins when a meteor crash in the town of Onett introduces a boy named Ness to a being from the future. This entity informs Ness that he is one of four children destined to confront an alien entity named Giygas, who threatens the world. The journey to locate the other three companions forms the central narrative.
The party travels across a region called Eagleland and other countries, engaging in turn-based combat with on-screen enemies. Character actions in battle include standard attacks, the use of items, and unique special abilities. Some members possess psychic powers for offense or healing. Victory in these encounters grants experience to strengthen the party and money that is deposited into a bank account.
A distinct mechanical feature involves a rolling HP meter, where damage is subtracted from a character's health points gradually rather than instantly. This system allows for potential recovery if a battle concludes swiftly. Progress is recorded by using telephones to call Ness's father, while funds from battles are accessed via ATMs to purchase equipment and items in shops. An additional mechanic allows sufficiently powerful parties to cause weaker enemies to flee, enabling instant victories if pursued.
