Resident Evil: Gaiden is set on the Starlight, a cruise ship crossing the Atlantic Ocean. The vessel is the reported location of a new biological weapon created by the Umbrella Corporation, the same entity responsible for the Raccoon City incident.
Players must navigate the ship to locate and destroy this weapon. A secondary objective is to find Leon S. Kennedy, who was dispatched by an anti-Umbrella group but has since gone missing. The environment is populated by hostile undead creatures familiar from other titles in the series.
Gameplay involves exploring the liner from a top-down perspective, which shifts to a first-person view for combat encounters. Various weapons and items can be found aboard the ship to aid in this task.
