Monkey Puncher Overview
Monkey Puncher is a Game Boy Color title centered on training a monkey for boxing, with the narrative goal of rescuing a kidnapped sibling. The player selects a boy or girl protagonist, with the unchosen character filling the sibling role.
Training involves several activities to improve the monkey's core attributes: speed, power, strength, stamina, and knowledge. Most exercises require the player to input rhythmic button presses for the monkey to mimic, a process it gradually masters. A separate shopping activity allows the monkey to procure items, with its success rate and the quality of goods found improving alongside its knowledge stat. Sparring sessions provide a small boost to all attributes simultaneously.
Breeding is a key system for acquiring new monkeys with potentially superior stats. This can be done between the player's own monkeys, with a friend's via link cable, or at an in-game dating shop. The boxing matches themselves are not directly controlled; instead, the player manages health and stamina between rounds and offers strategic advice. Victories are achieved by knockout, referee decision, or by having more remaining health if the match timer expires.
